Mental health disorders are very common in the United Kingdom.
However, many people are still reluctant to talk about their mental health due to the stigma that is still associated with mental illness.
Fortunately, there are a number of mental health charities that are working hard to raise mental health awareness and remove any stigmas attached to mental health.
Many of these charities provide much-needed services to people struggling with a mental health disorder and fund mental health research.
In this article, we will share the top 5 mental health charities in the UK.
These organisations all have high levels of accountability and transparency for donors.
They direct the vast majority of their donations into providing services to people who are concerned about their mental health and mental health awareness campaigns.
Founded in 1946, MIND is one of the UK’s largest mental health charities.
They have a nationwide presence which includes more that 140 Mind Centres and 150 charity shops.
The Mind centres work across a wide spectrum of communities to provide mental health services directly to anyone in need.
The Mind team collaborates with other mental health service providers in each area to ensure the services that they are offering are in demand.
Some of the services offered include peer support, therapy, employment assistance, and crisis care.
Mind provides a popular mental health information and support phone line which operates from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (except for bank holidays).
The organisation also has a large online community called Elefriends, which helps people discuss their mental health openly with others who have dealt with similar challenges.
This charity is well known across the UK and has many high profile sponsors and ambassadors including Stephen Fry, who works as the organisation’s president.
Stephen’s involvement has helped to raise the profile of the charity and makes their mental health awareness campaigns much more effective.
Sane is a large national mental health charity that was established in 1986.
It was created after a series of articles in The Times on mental health attracted a huge public response.
UK citizens were shocked by the neglect suffered by many mentally ill people and wanted to help those in need.
The charity was formed by Marjorie Wallace, the person responsible for writing the articles for The Times.
The main aims and outcomes of Sane are:
- To raise awareness and combat stigma about mental illness, educating and campaigning to improve mental health services.
- To provide care and emotional support for people with mental health problems, their families and carers as well as information for other organisations and the public.
- To initiate research into the causes and treatments of serious mental illness such as schizophrenia and depression and the psychological and social impact of mental illness.
The charity has a mental health helpline called SANEline, which is staffed by more than 130 trained volunteers.
They also run various mental health awareness campaigns including the black dog campaign, which places sculptures of black dogs in public spaces around the UK.
Mental Health Foundation
The Mental Health Foundation is one of the most active mental health charities in the United Kingdom.
Their mission is simple — “to help people understand, protect and sustain their mental health”.
They achieve this mission with dozens of different initiatives including research projects, awareness campaigns, outreach programs, and direct support for anyone concerned about their mental health.
Many of the services provided by the Mental Health Foundation are aimed at helping UK residents prevent a mental illness from occurring in the first place.
They tailor their programs to suit individuals with different circumstances.
For example, they will have a program that are designed to help seniors improve their mental and another to help professionals deal with work stress.
The highly successful Peer Education Project runs in schools across the UK.
It is aimed at giving young people the skills they will need to maintain their mental health and help their peers.

Mental health issues aren’t just limited to adults.
Many children and young people in the United Kingdom are dealing with conditions like depression, anxiety, and chronic stress.
Young Minds was established to help these young people cope with the everyday stresses of life and take care of their own mental health.
The organisation’s primary goal is to help young people live healthy and happy lives.
They achieve this goal by giving young people the information and support they need to be pro-active about their own mental health.
The charity also gathers information from young people abut the support they receive.
This information is passed along to the NHS to improve the mental health services that are available to children and young adults.
Young Minds runs many awareness campaigns each year, many of which are made available in schools across the UK.
Some of those campaigns include websites that are packed with useful information on mental health.
Together was established in 1987 with the goal of helping people with mental illness living independently.
